Today I had a lovely visit with my parents, both 91 years old. They were telling me that the previous night Mum had fallen out of bed and couldn’t get back up. It was 3am, and rather than ring Penny who lives right next door, or me just five minutes down the road, Dad tried for two hours to get her back in bed! Oh dear. They said they had a lot of laughs during the whole fiasco, but I nevertheless growled at them and said they MUST ring us if anything like that happens again. The crazy thing is that Penny was actually already awake and could have been there in two minutes. What an analogy that is! (I asked Mum and Dad if I could share about their night time dramas – dear Dad smiled and gave me an emphatic yes.)
How often do we fail to call out to God for help, and struggle on in our own strength? Why don’t we truly understand how willing he is to rush to our side? Why don’t we realise how very close he is to us in our time of need? Why do we feel like we don’t want to bother him? Dear Mum was worried about waking us up! Why didn’t she realise that we would have loved to have come to her help? Ah, the human nature! I remember someone from St John’s telling me that many of the old people who have their alarm system, won’t ever use it. They don’t want to be a bother.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy-laden and I will give you rest.” Psalms tells us he is a very present, close help in time of trouble. We just need to call out to him and ask him for help.
Dad has given me his solemn promise today that he won’t hesitate to call us if it happens again – no matter what the time is. And that makes me feel very happy. 🙂
