The Bare Bough

Years ago I saw a photo of a bird singing his little heart out on a bare bough. His song is seen as vapour coming out of his throat on a cold morning. I have kept a copy of that photo and have it on my notice board in our ‘little room’. (Always a great place for quotes and poignant reminders!)

The quote I’ve written on the photo says:

“Birds sing on a bare bough, O believer, cans’t not thou?” (Sorry, can’t remember where I found it!)

It reminds me of the beautiful scriptures in Habakkuk 3 v 17 – 19:

“Though the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls; yet will I rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Saviour. The sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.”

There can be times when things go wrong in our lives – often a whole string of them together! (Count the number of negatives in those verses) But even then, when it seems like everything is going wrong, we can trust in God. Seasons come and they go. We were just reading Ecclesiastes 3 this morning  – “there is a season for everything…” Go ahead and read it. There will be times when if we are to sing at all, it will be on a bare bough. But let’s sing our hearts out, knowing that God is over all. Spring will come again.
